How to Find Grants for Mobile Surveillance Cameras

Mobile video surveillance cameras are one of the most effective ways for law enforcement agencies to fight and investigate crime.

Each year, more than $600m is made available through grant funding to support agencies looking to purchase and install mobile surveillance units.

WCCTV recently published a step-by-step guide on writing and submitting a grant funding application; you can download your free copy below.

Writing a compelling justification for your agency to receive funding is a critical part of the process. Still, the whole process begins with knowing where to look for available grants, and identifying relevant opportunities.

Below, WCCTV, the USA's leading supplier of rapid deployment surveillance cameras for law enforcement, highlights four grant funding streams available to PDs.

Grant Funding for Mobile Surveillance Cameras

Listed below are all of the grant programs that have supported agencies to purchase surveillance cameras.

Justice Assistance Grants

The Department of Justice (DoJ) offers grant funding opportunities that allow for purchasing surveillance cameras and other equipment.

The Justice Assistance Grant program awards grants to state and local government units to specifically enhance the ability of law enforcement agencies to investigate, arrest and prosecute criminals.

Although the DoJ grants cover a broad range of crime prevention initiatives, a well-written and comprehensively justified request for surveillance camera funding will succeed.

An example of this is the Waxahachie Police Department, which recently received $50,000 funding via a Justice Assistance Grant to purchase a mobile surveillance trailer.

Homeland Security Grants

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) provides grant opportunities to support state and local government agencies' initiatives to create safer neighborhoods.

These grants cover mobile surveillance cameras, including the purchase of equipment and associated training programs.

Four grant programs comprise the Homeland Security grant program: the State Homeland Security Program, the Urban Areas Security Initiative, the Citizen Corps Program, and the Metropolitan Medical Response System.

Public Safety Partnership and Community Policing Grants

The DoJ also sponsors the Public Safety Partnership and Community Policing Grants program.

These grants are awarded to support state and local law enforcement agencies looking to implement preventive measures to crime rather than reactive ones.

These grants cover the purchase of crime prevention technology, such as mobile surveillance cameras, as part of an overall community policing strategy.

American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA) Grant

ARPA grants enable communities and law enforcement to invest in preventative policing methods such as mobile surveillance trailers or mounted pole cameras.

Public records show that at least five municipalities in Connecticut have allocated millions of dollars provided through the ARPA to equip local police departments with various surveillance technology.

Secure Our Schools Program

ISDs can apply for grant funding to cover the cost of surveillance cameras and installations to support their effort in making their facilities safer.

The Secure Our Schools Program, funded by the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), provides grants that specifically cover surveillance cameras as a tool for violence prevention within school settings.

These grants will typically cover up to 50% of the total project costs.
